Floor Cleaning & Maintenance Guide

Your floor is designed with low maintenance in mind, however, from time to time your new
floors will require some maintenance. Follow these simple steps to achieve many years of
enjoyment from your floor.

How to clean your floors

1. Clean the floor regularly using dry cleaning methods. Suitable methods include using a microfibre spray & mop system, soft broom or vacuum with a soft brush attachment only.

2. Regular removal of surface dirt and grit will prevent the surface of your floors from being scratched.

3. To remove water soluble dirt, clean using a PH Neutral Wood Floor Cleaner. First dry clean the floor to remove surface dirt and debris. Spray the surface sparingly with a Neutral Wood Floor Cleaner and clean using a microfibre cleaning pad.

4. Rinse cleaning pads regularly in clean water during use and replace when dirty. Most cleaning pads can be washed in a washing machine after use, check the manufacturers recommendations.

Protect your floor from furniture

Use felt protectors under heavy pieces of furniture and chairs. Use protective mats at all exterior entrances. Do not use rubber-based furniture or mats as the rubber may leach into the floor. When moving furniture, protect your floor by using a dolly for moving furniture or appliances. Try not to slide or roll across the floor.

Use rugs in high traffic areas

In areas of excessive traffic and wear, please make use of runners or area rugs. Install a good quality mats both inside and outside of external doors. Mats should be as large as possible and be able to remove both grit and moisture. Regularly move rugs and mats to reduce spot fading. Direct sun exposure will alter the appearance of the coating on your floor, especially engineered timber floors.

Wipe up all spillages immediately

Animal urine, cooking fats, and other similar materials can damage the floor if left on the surface for any length of time. This may result in permanent staining in some cases.

Maintain Pets

If you have any pets, keep their nails nice and short to help look after your floors, especially if they like to run around the house! Mishaps can happen, make sure to wipe up animal urine immediately.

Maintain a comfortable living temperature

Maintain relative humidity levels between 30% and 70% and temperature between 15-30°C. Timber floors are a natural product and will expand and contract with weather changes.

Decorate with blinds

Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight through the use of blinds or curtains. Direct sun exposure will alter the appearance of your floor coating, especially engineered timber.

Allow expansion gaps

All doorways and adjoining rooms should have expansion joints to allow your floating floor to naturally expand and contract.

Protect your floors

Oil soaps, wax, liquid or other household products may affect your coating and should be avoided.

Leave your shoes at the door

Whenever possible remove your shoes. Spiked heels or shoes in need of repair can severely damage your floor.

Repair surface scratches

In many instances, floors don’t need to be fully restored – they just need a little spruce up. Regular use for all floors and furniture, no matter how carefully we protect them, can result in scuffs and scratches that are unsightly.

Provided the damage is on the surface of the floor, Gilly's Scratch Cover Oil or Wax is a wonderful way to blend and cover the blemishes.

If further restoration is required, please contact Strikedeals for advice prior to beginning.

Bring dull floors back to life

Bring dull floors back to life If areas of the floor begin to look dull in comparison to the remainder, the use of a Wood Floor Refresher should be considered. Wood Floor Refresher is designed to restore an even sheen to the surface whilst giving added protection against future traffic. Typically, floors maintained using a Wood Refresher can be refurbished in the future without having to be sanded back to bare timber.

Restore Engineered Timber Floors

Regular maintenance of your timber floor and the application of a wood refresher will extend the longevity of your engineered timber floors before a complete refurbishment is required.

Timber can be sanded and rejuvenated with a polyurethane or water-based coating to restore the overall appearance of the floor. Sanding and re-coating of any Strikedeals Australia's engineered timber floors should only ever be carried out by a professional flooring contractor. If you are considering refinishing your floor, please consult a professional finishing service or Strikedeals Australia for advice.

Regular Vacuuming

Thorough and frequent vacuuming, particularly in high traffic areas, is important for prolonging the life of your carpet and enhancing its appearance. Three vacuum passes for light soiled areas is recommended, with five to seven passes for heavily soiled areas. Vacuuming against the natural pile direction first lifts the pile, helping to unsettle and remove dirt and grit while reducing matting. Then, vacuum in the direction of the pile to achieve a uniform finish.

Spot Cleaning

Carpet is not 100% stain proof but to ensure best results from spot cleaning, follow these easy steps. Immediately remove as much of the spill as possible. For solids use a blunt knife or spoon. Blot up liquids by applying pressure with white paper towels or tissues. Use a wet/dry vacuum for large spills. NEVER scrub or rub the carpet during the stain removal (or rinsing) process as a fuzzy area may result.

Steam Cleaning

Depending on usage, carpet should be professionally steam cleaned (hot water extraction) every 12-18 months to revitalize your carpet and remove any oily, sticky and well-settled soils that cause gradual, significant dulling of colours. Steam cleaning should only be undertaken by a professional carpet cleaner.
